He wasn’t. And that’s the whole answer, really — but the reason it keeps coming up is worth unpacking, because the words people use to describe lockers hide some genuinely important differences. Not differences between “steel” and “metal,” but differences between one unit and the next.

If you’re sourcing steel lockers in bulk — for a school, a gym, a factory floor, or an office fitout — this is the distinction that will actually affect your quote, your freight, and whether the units still look decent three years from now.

Are Steel Lockers and Metal Lockers Actually the Same Thing?

Yes. In the commercial furniture trade, the two terms are interchangeable, with one small nuance.

“Metal lockers” is the broad category word. It covers anything with a metal body — steel, stainless steel, aluminium, even galvanised sheet. It’s the term that appeared first historically, when lockers were made from whatever sheet metal was available, and it stuck.

“Steel lockers” is more specific. It names the material. And in the overwhelming majority of commercial and institutional orders, that material is cold-rolled steel with a powder-coated finish. When a supplier quotes you “steel lockers,” that’s what you’re getting — unless they specify otherwise.

Here’s the part that trips buyers up: the reverse isn’t true. Not every “metal locker” is a steel locker. Aluminium lockers exist. So do stainless steel units, which are a different material with a different cost structure. So a supplier advertising “metal lockers” at an unusually low price might be selling aluminium, or a very thin steel gauge, and using the vaguer word to leave room.

That’s the only situation where the terminology matters. If you see “metal lockers” on a quote, ask what the body material actually is. If the answer is “cold-rolled steel,” you’ve got steel, whatever the header says.

Why the Two Terms Got Confused in the First Place

Part of it is history. Part of it is marketing. And part of it is that the product category genuinely did fork at some point.

Go back far enough and almost all lockers were steel. Then plastic lockers arrived — HDPE and similar polymers, aimed at wet environments like swimming pools and shower blocks, where steel corrodes even with a good coating. At that point “metal locker” became a useful umbrella term, because buyers needed a word that meant “not plastic.”

Laminate and wood lockers came next, mostly for upscale gyms and country clubs where the aesthetic budget was larger. Now you have a market with at least four material families, and “metal” is the shorthand for the big one.

Look at the first two rows. That’s a 0.2mm spread on paper — and it’s the single biggest determinant of whether a locker dents when someone slams a kit bag into it. It also moves the unit price, the weight, and therefore the freight cost on a container.

What “Cold-Rolled Steel” Actually Means

Cold-rolled steel is sheet steel that’s been passed through rollers at room temperature. That process gives it a smoother surface and tighter dimensional tolerance than hot-rolled steel, which is why it’s the default for furniture that needs a clean paint finish.

The grade you’ll see most often in locker specs is Q235 or its international equivalents — a structural carbon steel that’s cheap, weldable, and strong enough for this application. You don’t need anything more exotic for a locker. What you do need is the thickness stated in millimetres, in writing, for both the body panels and the door panels separately.

Those two numbers are often different. A well-built unit might use 0.7mm for the body and 1.0mm for the doors, because the door takes the daily mechanical load. A cheap one might use 0.5mm throughout and rely on the buyer not asking.

Coating: Powder Coat, Galvanised, or Painted

Dry powder is sprayed electrostatically onto the steel and then cured in an oven, forming a bonded film that’s far more chip-resistant than liquid paint. Galvanised steel is a different approach: the steel is coated in zinc, typically by hot-dipping, which protects it sacrificially even if the surface is scratched. It’s heavier, it doesn’t take colour the same way, and it’s usually reserved for genuinely wet or outdoor-adjacent environments.

Liquid-painted lockers exist at the bottom of the market. They’re cheaper and they show it — the finish scratches, fades, and starts lifting at the edges within a couple of years in heavy use.

Door Construction and Hinges

Two more things to check, and they’re both invisible in a product photo.

First, door stiffening. Better units have a folded or reinforced edge on the door panel, which is what stops a thin door from flexing every time it’s opened. Second, hinge type. Exposed barrel hinges are cheaper; concealed or welded hinges look cleaner and survive longer. Ask whether the hinges are welded to the frame or riveted onto it — riveted hinges work loose.

Once you know steel lockers and metal lockers are the same thing, the more useful comparison is steel against the alternatives. Here’s how the main material families actually differ in service:

For the vast majority of B2B orders — schools, offices, factories, gyms, healthcare — powder-coated cold-rolled steel is the right answer. It’s the best balance of cost, security, and service life. The exceptions are genuine: a poolside changing room should be plastic, and a pharmaceutical cleanroom probably wants stainless.

What This Means When You’re Buying in Bulk

Here’s the practical version. When you’re comparing quotes for steel lockers in bulk, the material question is already settled — everyone is quoting cold-rolled steel. What you’re actually comparing is:

  • Thickness, stated in millimetres, separately for body and door. This is the number that drives durability and price.
